Speech Title
Carlos Miele: the dialogue between two worlds
If one of the characteristics of design, and particularly of fashion design, is TO GIVE FORM TO A VISION, my vision is the one of my origins. That is the source of my creations, an EMOTIONAL HOME from where I take inspiration and draw new perspectives for improvisation and spontaneity.
Bio
Carlos Miele, Fashion Entrepreneur, Carlos Miele Ltda Brazil – his ability to mesh his design and entrepreneurial skills with a social conscience, in employing over 1500 people from the favelas of Sao Paulo, has made Carlos a household name in his native Brazil, as well as in New York, Paris and Milan.
One of the main characteristics of Carlos Miele’s work is his creative convergence of cut and design with combinations of craft and luxury. His designs transcend the influences of his Brazilian roots with the application of cutting edge technology and an appreciation of contemporary lifestyles, creating a work that is fresh and unique. Born in Sao Paulo, Miele has presented his last 11 fashion shows in New York, always receiving a great outcome from the press and trend setters.
In June of 2003, Miele opened his first flagship store in the Meatpacking District in Manhattan, New York. The project was created by the architect and visual artist Hani Rashid, from Asymptote. The space is considered one of NY City’s references of contemporary architecture as published in several international books and architectural magazines. It represented New York at the International Biennial of Architecture and Design and received many awards, including two as “the store of the year”: “The Annual Interiors Awards Competition” and “The Visual Merchandizing and Store Design”. In November 2007, the designer opened his new international store at rue Saint-Honoré, in Paris. The project was also designed by Hani Rashid and the atmosphere of the two-level space, 230 square meters, is inspired by the exuberant Brazilian culture and Baroque style, combined with the coolness and precision of new technological means. While reinterpreting part of the lesson of the Brazilian masters Oscar Niemeyer and Roberto Burle-Marx in terms of abstract figurative affinities emphasizing internal perspective, the store attempts to reverse its terms into a geometric eddy, capable of engaging and enticing visitors in an environmental installation, where fashion products are an inseparable part of the whole.
In the end of 2006, Carlos Miele launched his contemporary line called, Miele. Technology and Brazilian artifacts were always incorporated in an innovative manner within the Carlos Miele line and also now on this second line that stems from the designer’s Runway Collection. This new line, more casual, establishes a dialogue between the contemporary and the traditional, matching a cosmopolitan, sophisticated and independent woman’s desires. Already being sold in important department stores in 19 countries, the Miele line will now have its first international store opened in the US, and Miami has been chosen to host it. The opening is planned to February 2008, at the Village of Merrick Park, where there will be stores as Gucci, Burberry, Carolina Herrera, Roberto Cavalli, Neiman Marcus, Jimmy Choo, among others.
Carlos Miele collections are worn by celebrities such as Jennifer Lopez, Sandra Bullock, Petra Nemcova, Christina Aguilera, Heidi Klum, Alicia Keys, Eva Longoria, Debra Messing and Iman, among others. The main line is currently carried in department stores of 24 countries and both lines are also present in two international showrooms in the cities of Antwerpe and Milan, in Europe.
The year of 2007 was very important to Carlos Miele. Besides the new store in Paris, the designer is preparing his first international advertisement campaign, to be launched for the Spring 2008. Miele has also launched a project in collaboration with the Rainforest Foundation – US, started in 1989 by Sting and his wife, Trudie Styler. The designer, who is an avid supporter of the Rainforest Foundation, invited influential supporters as Scarlett Johansson, Diana Picasso, Camilla Belle, Rachel Zoe, Caroline Trentini, Alice Braga, Bebel Gilberto, Padma Lakshmi and Hani Rashid to join him by each designing a unique t-shirt. The T-shirts are already being sold at Carlos Miele´s stores in New York, Paris and Brazil and the profits will benefit the programs supported by the Foundation, which protects the Rainforest and the indigenous people of the Amazon, in Brazil.
