Bio
The pottery from the Koninklijke Tichelaar Makkum is famous. But hardly anyone knows that this oldest company of the Netherlands, founded in 1594,is managed by mine- engineer, Jan Pieter Tichelaar.
He took over the position from his father in 1994. The business now has 73 employees on the payroll.
After high school in Sneek, Tichelaar went to Delft to study Mechanical engineering, he switched to mining engineering and graduated in 1988 with a specialization in ore-technology.
Tichelaar is a member of the board of the Technical centre of the Ceramic Industry, the general association of Pottery Factories and the Foundation- a new guild to promote craftsmanship and quality, an umbrella of eleven traditional companies.
Tichelaar, which is since 1960 royal, used brick factory who at the end of the seventeen century manufactured plates, tiles and later ornamental pottery.
About 100 tons of calcareous clay which was needed for the production was extracted the neighborhood.
Nowadays the company produces the original Delfts Pottery and tiles, but also glazed roofing tiles and glazed bricks. The company is also involved by restorations and new-estate development. For architects, designers and artesians.
Recently the company has changed from stock keeping system with a permanent stock of handicraft pottery to an order directed system which can also serve the architectural and restoration market. The company had to, because as a factory of pottery they had reached their limits. Now the company uses its knowledge to help create new designs with modern artists.
